Davis Faces Circus In Recall Race

California Gov. Gray Davis "insisted" that "no prominent Democrats" will become candidates in the Oct. 7 recall election "and that his party remains united behind him, even as another Democratic House member joined those urging Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) to enter the campaign," the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Although ABC News says Arnold Schwarzenegger is telling friends he will not run, the San Jose Mercury News notes that "the field of potential replacement candidates for Davis mushroomed: To date, a total of 123 Californians have taken out papers to run for governor in the recall."

The good news for Davis: "Every one of the major potential challengers... has lost a statewide election," the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Finally, California Insider notes that Davis cannot run to succeed himself. It's a question several Political Wire readers have asked recently.

Update: "Irritated that I keep quoting people who say Arnold is out, George Gorton, the actor's political guru, left a message on" California Insider's voice mail "in the middle of the night insisting that no decision has been made and that no announcements are planned for today. And that, he says, is official."
