Dean Takes Lead In South Carolina

A new Zogby poll in South Carolina shows Howard Dean "has taken a slight lead," though "there is still no clear favorite." Dean, Sen. John Edwards, Wesley Clark, Sen. Joe Lieberman, Rep. Dick Gephardt and Al Sharpton are all within the margin of error.

Says Zogby: "This just underscores for me the importance of Iowa and New Hampshire at gatekeepers in this race. Any suggestion that the first two states are irrelevant this year is nonsense. Once the race takes shape after New Hampshire, the early winners will dominate and the early losers and non-contestants will more likely suffer."

Update: Dean campaign manager Joe Trippi announced that "beginning on Monday we will begin a sustained television ad buy in South Carolina, and we'll stay on the air through the South Carolina primary."
