Dean Plays Cautious

"With a wary eye on" Wesley Clark's rise in the polls, "Howard Dean's campaign has begun to limit his availability to the press, and the candidate himself is watching his words after several recent statements unleashed a storm of criticism from opponents," the New York Times reports.

Behind the scenes, however, the Los Angeles Times notes Dean's staffers yesterday "staked out Clark's campaign appearances, handing out fliers that called the retired Army general 'pro-war' and questioned whether he was a 'real' Democrat."

Interestingly, a USA Today profile of Dean campaign manager Joe Trippi portrays him as a risk taker despite the campaign's new cautious tone.

USA Today says Clark's "military credentials and disciplined manner are attracting some Democrats who had been leaning toward" Dean for their party's presidential nomination."

Clark "is banking on his ability to appeal to voters in the South to beat Dean," the New York Daily News reports.
