Quick Search For A Running Mate

As first mentioned last week, Sen. John Kerry "has told associates that he wants to select a running mate within eight weeks, an accelerated schedule intended to help him raise money and respond to a bombardment of attacks from President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney that worries party leaders," the New York Times reports.

Among the Democrats interviewed so far: Senator John Edwards of North Carolina, Representative Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri, Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico and Gov. Thomas J. Vilsack of Iowa.

However, some Democrats close to Kerry, "said Senator John S. McCain, Republican of Arizona, remained a highly alluring choice. One adviser said that choice would almost guarantee Mr. Kerry's election."

Adding fuel to the McCain speculation, the Boston Herald notes McCain "unleashed an attack on his own party, saying the GOP is 'astray' on key issues and criticizing President Bush on the war in Iraq."

Update: The AP says a website "that sells merchandise related to Democratic candidates isn't having much luck with a T-shirt promoting the duo of John Kerry and Bill Richardson. In fact, the owner of the site, Nathan Rudy, says he hasn't sold a single item that links Kerry's name to the New Mexico governor's."
