Senate Harmony Disintegrates

The battle for control of the Senate is heating up, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"Realpolitik is the rule, and Senate comity is a casualty. Friends betray one another with surprise amendments. Roll- call votes are a rarity. As unfinished bills pile up -- from energy and welfare reform to asbestos litigation and the Internet -- it has become the Senate of Keeping Score."

"Conservatives and Democrats alike are asking similar questions, among them: What does the Republican majority believe in besides keeping power? And if the price of power is destroying working relationships in the Senate, what is accomplished? Adding to the tense atmosphere is the closely fought -- and very personal -- presidential campaign between President Bush and Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts."

The Newhouse News Service notes Republicans "face an unexpectedly stiff challenge this fall to their control of the U.S. Senate -- complicated by a... sharp shift in political winds since the start of the year."
