Poll Shows Very Tight Presidential Race

According to a new Fox News poll, Sen. John Kerry leads President Bush 45% to 43% in a one-on-one race. When independent Ralph Nader is included, he receives three percent and Bush and Kerry are each at 42%.

Bush "is seen as the candidate best suited to handle terrorism and national crises," while Kerry "tops Bush on handling domestic issues such as health care and Social Security." Both candidates "are viewed as equally likely to inspire confidence in the presidency."

"Polling was conducted during a week that included nationwide mourning of former Republican President Ronald Reagan, and also showcased President Bush meeting with world leaders during the G8 summit and winning the unanimous adoption of a U.N. resolution on Iraq."

Update: A new poll commissioned by the New Democrat Network finds the presidential race "is a dead heat nationally," but Kerry is beating Bush "by eight percentage points (51 to 43) in battleground states."
