Halliburton Under Investigation

Late last week, Halliburton announced that the Securities and Exchange Commission had "commenced a formal investigation into payments made in connection with... [the] construction of a natural gas liquefaction facility in Nigeria." The Dallas Morning News notes the alleged payments, which amounted to $180 million in bribes, took place while Dick Cheney served as CEO of the company.

Le Figaro "has reported that the judge in the case is looking into what role, if any, Mr. Cheney may have played."

Update: Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) demanded that Attorney General John Ashcroft "appoint a special counsel to investigate whether Vice President Dick Cheney helped his old firm Halliburton get lucrative deals in Iraq," Reuters reports.
