Though the Bush campaign insists it has no ties to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth group, the Dallas Morning News reports that Bob Perry, the "key bankroller" for the group, "is listed as the co-host of a New York City fund-raiser next week... whose guest list includes President Bush's top political adviser." President Bush's father is also on the guest list.
Through a spokesman, Perry said, "I never approved the use of my name. I'm not going to be there."
Meanwhile, in a scathing and must-read editorial, the Los Angeles Times says it doesn't believe the swift boat veteran's effort is independent of the Bush campaign. "The technique President Bush is using against John F. Kerry was perfected by his father against Michael Dukakis in 1988, though its roots go back at least to Sen. Joseph McCarthy."
Update: Josh Marshall digs up an old Financial Times article quoting a senior Republican official: "By the time the White House finishes with Kerry, no one will know what side of the (Vietnam) war he fought on."
