Howard Dean emerged "as the almost assured new leader of the Democratic National Committee, as one of his main rivals quit the race and Democrats streamed to announce their support of a man whose presidential campaign collapsed one year ago," the New York Times reports.
The Boston Globe says Dean's "leading competitor, 37-year-old party organizer Donnie Fowler, made it clear in an interview that he would not spend the days leading up to the DNC's Feb. 12 vote publicly challenging Dean."
Nonetheless, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette notes Pennsylvania's Democratic chairman endorsed Fowler "in an 11th-hour effort to blunt the accelerating momentum of Dean's bid."
The AP reports former Rep. Tim Roemer and Simon Rosenberg are also staying in the race for now, though neither has generated much support.
