Dr. Frist Treads a Delicate Path

Though he's exploring a 2008 presidential bid on the basis that he's more a doctor than a politician, Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN) "may have overplayed his hand by offering a medical opinion in the Terry Schiavo case," the Los Angeles Times reports.

On the Senate floor last week, Frist said Schiavo's feeding tube should not be removed "based on footage" he's seen.

"Frist's comments raised eyebrows in the medical community. Although there are no official rules against the practice, ethicists said, it is generally considered unprofessional for a doctor to make or question a diagnosis on the basis of incomplete information."

Meanwhile, the Knoxville News-Sentinel notes another doctor -- DNC Chairman Howard Dean -- accused Frist of grandstanding on the case.
