DeLay's Woes Deepen

"The man known on Capitol Hill as 'The Hammer' is getting hammered," USA Today reports.

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's "take-no-prisoners style and unapologetically right-wing views have made him a hero to conservative Republicans and anathema to liberal Democrats. DeLay's fundraising built the Republican majority in Congress; his arm-twisting kept that majority together to win controversial votes in favor of deregulation, tax cuts and abortion restrictions. Now, he's under such intense attack that the White House issued a statement of support Monday."

The Christian Science Monitor notes "the gap between what House Republicans say on the record about their embattled leader Tom DeLay and what they say in private is wide but narrowing."

Meanwhile, Robert Novak says the New York Times was "fishing for an op-ed piece" by former Rep. Bob Livingston (R-LA) as "part of a calculated campaign to bring down the single most powerful Republican in Congress."
