Immigration Issue Looms for 2008

We mentioned immigration as the potential hot button issue in the 2008 presidential campaign earlier this week. Now, Chuck Todd writes in the National Journal that "the use of ballot initiatives to drive turnout (especially in presidential battleground states) could lead us down a very familiar path in 2008. But instead of the key issue being gay marriage, as it was in 2004, it will be immigration."

"There's a disconnect between the politically correct legislators and media in Washington and the general public on the issue. Call it xenophobia if you want, but these initiatives are popular with the public, particularly as the economy stagnates and some lower-income workers are looking for someone to blame."

Meanwhile, the Rocky Mountain News notes Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) "has recently started traveling to early presidential primary states like New Hampshire, saying he wants to make sure the 'serious candidates' put the immigration issue front-and-center in the 2008 race."
