Warner Clarifies 2008 Plans

Virginia Gov. Mark Warner (D) said that "he will continue speaking out on some federal issues... but that he wouldn't take formal steps to begin a presidential bid until after he leaves office Jan. 15," the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

"Warner said he was surprised by the major coverage, both in Virginia and nationally, last week when word leaked that he would set up a federal political-action committee to raise money to promote issues and candidates on the federal level."

"Notwithstanding Warner's coyness about his presumed national ambitions, he reminded reporters that he could return to Virginia in 2009 and run for a second term as governor."

Said Warner: "I have not ruled out coming back after four years."
