Is Roberts' Nomination Stalling?

Knowing Supreme Court nominations are essentially won in the first few hours, the Bush administration rolled out the choice of John Roberts perfectly. But now, it seems cracks are starting to appear.

The Miami Herald runs an interesting piece about how Roberts played a much larger role in the 2000 Florida recount -- "as legal consultant, lawsuit editor and prep coach for arguments before the nation's highest court" -- than previously disclosed. The White House previously said his role consisted of a brief meeting with Gov. Jeb Bush.

Another issue is whether Roberts actually belonged to the conservative Federalist Society. As the Washington Post notes, the "eagerness of the White House to distance Roberts from the Federalist Society baffled many conservatives." The question their reaction raises: What are they hiding?

Meanwhile, Reuters says the confirmation hearings will begin on Sept. 6.
