Ferrer May Still Face Run Off

Fernando Ferrer (D) captured the most votes in New York's Democratic mayoral primary last night, "but a strong possibility emerged that he might have to vie in a runoff for his party's nomination" against Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY), the New York Times reports. Unofficial results showed that Ferrer captured 39.949% of the vote, "a hairbreadth short of the 40% needed to avoid a runoff on Sept 27."

The New York Post notes Weiner "refused to surrender and vowed to press on with his campaign."

A Political Wire reader writes: "The results are eerily similar to the 1997 Mayoral Primary. In that one, Manhattan Borough President, Ruth Messinger (D), initially was forced into a runoff by Al Sharton (D), Civil Rights Activist. However, in the end, Sharpton was denied a runoff slot, as absentee votes made Messinger the nominee by 1,000 votes."
