DeLay's Attempt to Pick Successor Failed

The Washington Post tells the behind-the-scenes story of how Rep. Tom DeLay's (R-TX) handpicked "placeholder" as House majority leader was overturned by an angry GOP caucus earlier today.

"The wild day of maneuvering made clear that beneath the image of lockstep discipline in the House -- which DeLay himself enforced for years -- the GOP caucus is rife with ambitious personalities in not-so-subtle competition."

Roll Call says a "conservative revolt" pushed aside Rep. David Dreier (R-CA) in favor of Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO). "Republican sources said the unusual new leadership setup -- under which Blunt is technically both Whip and Leader -- is expected to last at least until January, when the Republican Conference could hold a more conventional vote on who should fill the Majority Leader position."
