While President Bush "led a public campaign to shore up support for Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, his top White House aides and Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman launched a behind-the-scenes barrage of phone calls and e-mail to influential conservatives urging them to overcome their skepticism," the Washington Post reports.
"The effort to rally the president's usual allies met with uncertain results, winning some support but leaving conservatives coolly uncommitted about whether Bush made a wise choice."
Meanwhile, as Democrats watch conservatives recoil, the New York Times notes that even Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) backed off his support for Miers and said "he was now reserving judgment."
As we've noted before, the first hours after a Supreme Court nomination are the most critical and they don't seem to be going smoothly for Miers.
