States Put 527 Groups Under Scrutiny

"State and federal regulators are cracking down on non-profit political groups, so-called 527s, suspected of circumventing state campaign finance laws," Stateline.org reports.

The article is based on an interesting new study from the Center for Public Integrity. "With $51 million in the bank for 2005 so far, 527 committees are riding high in the off-year election cycle. On the campaign trail, though, many of these political nonprofit organizations are running afoul of state regulators and election authorities."
