Indictment Watch: Evening Update

Associates of Scooter Libby "expected an indictment on Friday charging him with making false statements to the grand jury in the C.I.A. leak inquiry," the New York Times reports. Karl Rove "will not be charged on Friday, but will remain under investigation," meaning the term of the federal grand jury will likely be extended.

"Fitzgerald's preparations for a Friday announcement were shrouded in secrecy, but advanced amid a flurry of behind-the-scenes discussions that left open the possibility of last-minute surprises."

The Washington Post has two sources who say Libby "was shopping for a white-collar criminal lawyer" and Rove "began assembling a public relations team in the event they are indicted."

The Los Angeles Times gives us the timing of the announcements, saying the grand jury "was expected to meet Friday morning, with an announcement by Fitzgerald expected about midday."
