"Signaling heightened opposition to the war in Iraq from a corner of long-standing support for the military, Rep. John Murtha, a conservative Pennsylvania Democrat, said today the United States should immediately begin to bring its troops home," the Los Angeles Times reports.
Read Murtha's statement. It's very powerful stuff.
Hotline On Call: "Murtha's move today makes it much easier for a lot of moderate or conservative Dems to reevaluate their own support for the war going into '06."
Roll Call: "Murthaís reversal on the war sent shockwaves through the Democratic Caucus and the halls of Congress given that he is a moderate and a hawk on military matters who had supported U.S. involvement in Iraq. "
Rod Dreher: "If tough, non-effete guys like Murtha are willing to go this far, and can make the case in ways that Red America can relate to -- and listening to him talk was like listening to my dad, who's about the same age, and his hunting buddies -- then the president is in big trouble. I'm sure there's going to be an anti-Murtha pile-on in the conservative blogosphere, but from where I sit, conservatives would be fools not to take this man seriously."
