"Democrats face pressure to fight Alito but won't promise filibuster," the Wall Street Journal's Washington Wire reports.
"Liberal groups work grass roots with anti-Alito commercials, rallies and petition drives that accuse Bush of catering to Republican right with Supreme Court pick. Activists meet with Senate Minority Leader Reid to press for all-out battle."
"But amid Alito's solid poll showings, 'we're a long way' from considering a filibuster, a Reid aide said.
Meanwhile, the New York Times reports "liberal and conservatives groups began running commercials presenting radically different images of the same judge."
What I'm hearing: Senate Democrats fear a filibuster backlash from voters in 2006. However, many Democratic strategists -- and Republicans too -- increasingly see a repeal of Roe v. Wade as a way to permanently fracture the GOP.
