Former DeLay Aide Pleads Guilty

Michael Scanlon, former business partner of lobbyist Jack Abramoff and former top aide to Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX), "pleaded guilty on Monday to conspiring to bribe a member of Congress and other public officials," the New York Times reports.

Scanlon's plea agreement details the extent of the conspiracy.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post explains the sudden worry on Capitol Hill: "Investigators are looking at half a dozen members of Congress, current and former senior Hill aides, a former deputy secretary of the interior, and Abramoff's former lobbying colleagues... Because of his central role in much of Abramoff's business, Scanlon could be a key witness in any trials that arise from the case."

Roll Call and The Hill note the investigation is dangerously close to Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH).
