Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-AZ), "the dean of Arizona's eight U.S. House members, a leading centrist voice on issues such as Social Security reform and immigration and a strong backer of free trade, announced that he will not run for re-election in 2006," the Arizona Republic reports.
The Phoenix Business Journal says the race for Kolbe's seat is wide open. "The retirement news will create a tidal wave of possible successors and Democrats will work hard to try to pick up a district which leans Republican but is politically moderate."
