A new CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll shows Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Rudy Giuliani (R) as "the early favorites to win their respective party's nomination" in 2008. "But those polled said they believe the former first lady would have a smoother path to the nomination than her GOP counterpart."
"Clinton snared the majority of the Democratic voters polled. And with more than two years before the primaries, she was ahead of her two nearest potential competitors by nearly 30 percentage points." Clinton attracted 43% support, while Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) and Sen. John Edwards (D-NC) each had 14%.
"Giuliani, on the other hand, edged out Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) by only 8 percentage points, 30% to 22%.
Update: An early peak at the National Journal Insider's Poll shows that 106 Members of Congress and 151 veteren political operatives also predict Clinton will win the Democratic nomination. But they think Sen. George Allen (R-VA), and not Giuliani or McCain, will be the Republican candidate.
