Bush's Address Seeks to Turn Opinion on Iraq

In an attempt to change perceptions of the Iraq war, the Washington Post notes President Bush made "made a direct appeal to war opponents" in a televised address last night, "conveying a more humble tone in saying he understands their arguments but asserting that there is no choice but to forge on."

Said Bush: "I have heard your disagreement and I know how deeply it is felt. Yet now there are only two options before our country: victory or defeat."

The New York Times notes it was Bush's "fifth major speech on Iraq in 19 days" and was "the culmination of an intense campaign by the White House to try to stop a slide in support for the war that began last summer."

Bush has called a press conference at 10:30 this morning.
