"Despite a weeklong campaign," both Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) "acknowledge they remain short of the tally required to succeed embattled former Majority Leader Tom DeLay as the No. 2 Republican in the House," the AP reports.
"Blunt claims the lead and issued a statement claiming more than 100 supporters, though his list of those willing to make their names public contains just 70 lawmakers... Boehner claimed 90 committed supporters, but only 36 have made public commitments." A total of 116 is need to win the secret ballot on February 2.
Meanwhile, Roll Call reports "a knowledgeable GOP source" from outside of Rep. John Shadeggís (R-AZ) camp "said the Arizonan had roughly 16 commitments as of Thursday morning and that if the number reaches 20, he will officially enter the race" for House majority leader.
Update: The Hotline reports that Shadegg will run.
