If you wondered why Speaker Dennis Hastert seems so eager to push Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH) from his committee chairmanship, look no further than the news magazines this week.
Evidence reviewed by Time appears to confirm that Ney is in deep trouble for his dealings with lobbyist Jack Abramoff. In recent plea deals, Abramoff and his business partner Michael Scanlon allege they gave Ney financial support in exchange for "official acts," and the e-mails appear to document one such situation.
Meanwhile, Newsweek learned that Ney personally lobbied then Secretary of State Colin Powell to relax U.S. sanctions on Iran on behalf of "a convicted airplane broker who had just taken the congressman and a top aide on an expense-paid trip to London."
