Petition Blunder Makes Race a Toss Up

Because of State Sen. Charlie Wilson's (D) failure to obtain the required petition signatures to appear on the ballot in Ohio's 6th congressional district, CQ Politics is changing its rating of the race to "No Clear Favorite" from "Leans Democratic."

Wilson's blunder "was a major embarrassment for national Democratic strategists and raises questions about both the strength of his campaign organization and his ability to win in November." He only needed 50 valid signatures of registered Democrats.

"Wilsonís options include waging a write-in campaign in the Democratic primary, which includes two little-known candidates who qualified for the primary ballot... Wilsonís other option is attempt to run in the general election as an independent candidate, which would require him to collect about 1,800 signatures by May 1."
