A new NPR survey finds Republicans "losing their stranglehold on national security and foreign policy and shows Democrats have a unique opportunity to get heard on keeping America safe."
In every key area -- the Iraq war, foreign ownership of US ports, and homeland security -- Democrats come out on top. "The only exception is the nuclear threat in Iran, where Republicans have a narrow 5 point advantage."
"These results are a reflection of Bushís collapse and the growing determination of Americans to vote for change. There has been a tectonic shift in the electorate with two thirds of the country now wanting to move in a new direction."
Other key findings:
President Bush's approval rate is just 39%, with 58% disapproving of his performance.
Democrats have "an historic" 15 point edge, 52% to 37%, in the generic congressional ballot.
