Political strategists Steve Jarding and Dave "Mudcat" Saunders were the only members of former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner's (D) inner circle to openly back James Webb (D), the victor of yesterday's U.S. Senate Democratic primary in Virginia.
Though they specialize in appealing to rural voters, as the Hotline notes, "this primary never really got beyond the so-called urban crescent (Northern VA, metro Richmond, Tidewater) of VA." In fact, the Richmond Times-Dispatch notes that "except in Northern Virginia, turnout was of soccer-score proportions. Fewer than 4 percent of registered voters went to the polls on a bright, warm day."
For Webb to have a chance of beating Sen. George Allen (R-VA), getting rural voters to come out for him will be the key. You can be certain that members of Allen's campaign team are buying copies of Foxes in the Henhouse by Jarding and Saunders to better understand what they're up against.
