New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine (D) called legislators into an "extraordinary" Fourth of July special session and urged lawmakers to "rise above the politics of fear" and pass a "fiscally honest" state budget that would end a shutdown of state government now in its fourth day, according to the Newark Star Ledger.
"Corzine, who ordered state government operations shut down on Saturday, is embroiled in a battle with Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts (D) over his plan to raise the sales tax from 6 percent to 7 percent... While saying he would work day and night on the budget, Corzine stressed he will not adopt any plan he believes would repeat one-shot spending gimmicks and erode New Jersey's long-term fiscal intergrity."
