Murtha's Evolution

The Hotline's Josh Kraushaar notes Rep. John Murtha's (D-PA) evolution from Blue Dog Democrat. "Since calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops in January, Murtha has effectively transformed himself from a backroom dealer who rarely sought the limelight to one of the most public, antiwar faces of the Democratic party. Heís muted his opposition to abortion rights and support of gun control while speaking more bluntly about getting out of Iraq."

Combined with incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's support, Murtha should become the next House Majority Leader. According to the AP, one key Murtha ally says he's already locked up the necessary votes.

Democrats can only hope Murtha has evolved from his links to the Abscam corruption probe. Watch Murtha on the FBI's Abscam surveillance tapes from 1978.
