"Dogged by delays in her hurricane recovery program, dismal poll numbers and pressure from her own party," Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco (D) announced "that she will not seek a second term this fall," the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
The Baton Rouge Advocate says Blanco's "stunning announcement" turned the race for governor "upside down and ignited new speculation" on whether former Sen. John Breaux (D-LA) will run. "Experts in both political parties said the decision by Blanco, a Democrat, amounts to a political bombshell that all but negates earlier chatter on who will be Louisiana's next governor."
