The AP reports that "Sen. Pete Domenici of New Mexico, an influential Republican voice on budget issues for a generation, intends to retire at the end of his term next year, party officials said Wednesday." A formal announcement will come Thursday in New Mexico.
Domenici, a six-term incumbent, is the fourth Senate Republican retiring in 2008. Among the contenders: Republican Representatives Heather Wilson and Steve Pearce and Democrats Rep. Tom Udall, Albuquerque Mayor Martin J. Chavez and state Lt. Gov. Diane Denish.
Domenici is the fourth Republican senator to announce his retirement this cycle.
