When Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS) resigns next month, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) "must appoint a replacement within 10 days to serve until a special election is held in November 2008 to fill the remainder of Lott’s term," CQ Politics reports.
Speculation on who Barbour might pick includes Rep. Charles W. “Chip” Pickering Jr. (R-MS) and Rep. Roger Wicker (R-MS). For Democrats, former Mississippi Attorney General Mike Moore (D) is the most prominent Democrat mentioned as a possible candidate for the seat in 2008.
Meanwhile, Mississippi’s other senator, Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS), is running for re-election in 2008, meaning both Senate seats will be up at the same time.
CQ has a good backgrounder on the Senate seats which are rated Safe Republican.
