Sen. John McCain holds a press conference this morning to discuss the bombshell story that rocked his presidential campaign last night. McCain's strategy so far is to discredit the New York Times for running it.
The Politico: "The McCain campaign is using a two-pronged attack to push back against
the story. First, they’ll argue it was a thinly sourced piece of
innuendo journalism. But McCain aides will also strike at the source,
using the Times’ liberal reputation as a means of self-defense to draw
sympathy from the GOP’s conservative base."
The New Republic will publish a story today about the "foot-dragging" in the New York Times newsroom "on the McCain story, and the back-and-forth within the paper about whether to publish it." The McCain campaign is suggesting the Times was forced into publishing their story by TNR.
Update: The McCain campaign has released a 1,500 word rebuttal to the Times story.
