Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick (D) and his former chief of staff "were charged today with multiple counts of perjury, obstruction
of justice, misconduct in office and conspiracy because of their
conduct in last year's police whistle-blower trial," according to the Detroit News.
The charges come after sexually explicit text messages surfaced that allegedly contradict his sworn denials of an affair with his top aide.
"Kilpatrick would be the first mayor of Detroit to be charged with a
crime while in office. Under the city charter, he can only be removed
from office if he is convicted of a felony."
