Time Poll: Obama Expands National Lead

A new Time magazine poll shows Sen. Barack Obama leading Sen. John McCain nationally, 50% to 43%.

Key points:

  • No Democrat has crossed the 50% threshold in the general election since before Ronald Reagan was elected, let alone done so a month before the election.
  • 23% of McCain supporters say they might change their mind, while only 15% of Obama's say they could be persuaded to switch
  • Voters give Obama a 45% to 37% edge over McCain as the better equipped candidate to handle the economic crisis
  • 23% of those who watched the first presidential debate said it made them more likely to vote for Obama, while 16% said they were more likely to vote for McCain.
Also dragging McCain down: President Bush's approval rating is 23%, the lowest number ever found in the poll.
