Obama's Press Conference

President Obama held his second prime time press conference in just over eight weeks. If it seemed strange to see him again, it's worth noting that in their eight years, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush each held just four.

Furthermore, Michael Calderone notes that "in quite a departure from the first presser -- and White House protocol -- Obama skipped over the nation's top newspapers. Indeed, there were no questions from the NY Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal or USA Today."

From the beginning, the questions were tough and required thoughtful answers. For the most part, Obama succeeded and showed once again that he's confident, has a firm grasp of the issues and is not afraid to stand up to the press. When CNN's Ed Henry pressed him on the speed of his response to the AIG bonus issue, Obama snapped back, "It took me a couple of days because I like to know what I'm talking about before I speak."

Obama was weakest when questioned about deficits in the later years of his budget projections. He was defensive and his answers were not as clear. More important, he showed his opponents in Congress where they might successfully attack his budget proposal.

Overall, however, I thought both Obama and the White House press corps did their jobs well tonight.
