New Jersey Voters Head to the Polls

New Jersey voters head to the poll today to choose who they want to battle it out for governor this fall. According to the Newark Star Ledger, it's been nearly 20 years since more than a fifth of the state's registered voters came out for a primary. In 2005, turnout in the gubernatorial primary was just 12% of those registered.

In the Republican primary, Chris Christie (R) and Steve Lonegan (R) have had an intense and sometimes nasty race. While Christie has led in just about every poll -- including by 24 points in one released yesterday -- Longegan is seen as a strong candidate among his party's base voters who are also more likely to turnout. One advantage for Lonegan: It's a closed primary in which only Republicans can vote.

On the Democratic side, Gov. Jon Corzine (D) has little competition in his bid for the nomination and is expected to win easily. However, as CQ Politics notes, Corzine will likely face a competitive general election in November no matter which Republican candidate he faces.

Polls close tonight at 8 p.m. ET.
