A Discussion with Bill Clinton

On the eve of the Clinton Global Initiative meetings in New York City, Political Wire was invited to a very small, freewheeling policy discussion with former President Bill Clinton.

clinton-goddard.jpg The conversation lasted nearly two hours on topics ranging from the politics of health care reform to the economics of climate change to the use of agriculture policy in a national defense strategy.  While Clinton wasn't shy in touting the successes of his presidency, he was also very open about the failures and offered advice on what the Obama administration could do to learn from his mistakes.

Clinton also affirmed his reputation for being both very intelligent and a policy wonk of the highest order. It's remarkable how he grasped the details of so many different issues. He also showed himself to be completely unconcerned about his schedule and repeatedly blew off an aide's attempts to get him to wrap up the conversation.

We'll have more details tomorrow.
