Whitman Out Front in California

A new Field Poll finds Meg Whitman (R) not only crushes Steve Poizner (R) in the Republican primary race for governor of California, 63% to 14%, but she now leads Jerry Brown (D) in the general election, 46% to 43%.

"Whitman has gained momentum as she's blanketed the state in TV ads."

Said pollster Mark DICamillo: "The question now is what does this mean for the Brown camp? Do you let Whitman have the airwaves to herself without any response from Brown?"

Dan Walters: "The poll indicates that Whitman may be able to take her nomination for granted and shift her focus - and her limitless personal financial resources - to the contest with Brown, perhaps by edging toward the middle of the ideological road and bolstering her standing among independents."

A new Rasmussen Reports survey shows Whitman and Brown tied at 40%.
