Though Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) speculates that Alvin Greene's (D) U.S. Senate candidacy was some kind of Republican dirty trick, a spokesman for Sen. James DeMint (R-SC) denies the charge vigorously saying, "It's ridiculous even to suggest that."
Dave Weigel: "One theory coming out of Republicans right now -- more a response to Clyburn than anything serious -- is that Democrats, for all their bluster, might have gotten Greene into the race to give defeated candidate Vic Rawl a boost. In South Carolina, if a candidate has no opponent, he is not listed on the ballot. Even then, why this guy?"
Meanwhile, Ben Smith notes Greene cannot name a place he campaigned.
And Rawl releases this statement: "As for Mr. Greene, what happens next is entirely in his hands. I wish him well, and hope he makes his decisions in the best interests of his family and the people of South Carolina."
