Kabuki Theater of a Debt Deal

Howard Kurtz takes a good look at how "nasty partisan rhetoric on both sides masked slow progress toward an agreement" on the raising the nation's debt ceiling.

"No one on the political stage wanted to be seen as going wobbly, but in the end they need a mutual-survival pact. So they've carried out a rendition of Kabuki theater, where what one saw on the outside didn't always reflect what was going on behind closed doors."

However, NBC News reports House Speaker John Boehner said this morning he and President Obama "were far apart from a deal and had hand gestures to show just how far apart they were. (About two feet, in case you were wondering.)"
