Arizona Kicks Off Calendar Mania

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) announced that her state will hold its Republican presidential primary on February 28, 2012, reports the Arizona Republic, a move that violates party rules dictating that only Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada can hold their primaries or caucuses before March 6.

The Des Moines Register spoke with Iowa GOP Chairman Matt Strawn and notes that Arizona's move could "create a domino-like reaction for early nominating voting states like Iowa, prompting them to reset their calendars to even earlier dates... South Carolina is now scheduled to hold its primary on Feb. 28, but it is unclear whether the Palmetto State is willing to share the date with Arizona."

Down the line: It seems likely that the Iowa caucuses will be moved earlier than their current date of February 6, meaning another January start to primary season.
