Kerrey Talked Seniority with Reid

Bob Kerrey (D) said he received certain assurances from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) before launching his campaign for the Nebraska Senate seat, the Omaha World Herald reports.

Said Kerrey: "The most important one was that when it came time to organize the Senate, he would respect my previous 12 years of previous service in the Senate, with no specific promise about seniority."

"Seniority is a tricky subject on Capitol Hill, and Republicans are already characterizing Kerrey and Reid's discussions as a smarmy backroom deal. It would be difficult for Reid to make any blanket promises of seniority without starting a revolt among other Senate Democrats."

But it could influence which committee assignments Kerrey would receive if elected.
