House Votes to Ban "Lunatic" from Laws

The U.S. House voted nearly unanimously to remove the term "lunatic" from sections of federal law, while the word "idiot" would remain, Bloomberg reports.

The bill's sponsors said the the change would eliminate "references that contribute to the stigmatization of mental health conditions."

The only "no" vote was cast by Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX): "Not only should we not eliminate the word 'lunatic' from federal law when the most pressing issue of the day is saving our country from bankruptcy, we should use the word to describe the people who want to continue with business as usual in Washington."
