Stand Off on Taxes Continues as Fiscal Cliff Nears

"High-stakes budget negotiations between the White House and House Republicans remain stubbornly stalemated over income-tax rates, with neither side showing movement in the latest round of private talks, stymieing discussion of most other issues," the Wall Street Journal reports.

An Obama administration official "delivered a fresh ultimatum to Republican negotiators, saying no budget deal would be possible unless the GOP agrees to allow top tax rates to rise."

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) "seemed to leave the door open to agreeing to some tax-rate increase, but then quickly slammed it shut with a renewed statement of opposition to any such concession."
