Brian Beutler: “Ahead of Thursday’s Supreme Court argument over Donald Trump’s claim to immunity for everything he did while president, the New York Times published a stirring call for the Supreme Court to rule against Trump with haste and in no uncertain terms—so that Trump can’t tee up a new series of dilatory appeals, and the case can go to trial before the election…”
“The author was Liz Cheney.”
“I’m obviously glad Cheney’s out there making this case. It was clever of Nancy Pelosi to make her, instead of Democratic chairman Bennie Thompson, the face of the House January 6 Committee back in 2021. But it also belied a lack of confidence among Democrats in the power of their own righteous indignation. And I suspect that’s why Cheney’s out there now making this case on her own.”
“The value of Cheney’s voice on this topic is in making the call for a swift ruling bipartisan. But it can’t be bipartisan if she’s the only one making it with any visibility.”
