Biden Dares the Courts
“President Biden has embraced the power of the pen, practically daring the courts to block new executive actions on gun control, student loan forgiveness and potentially the border,” Axios reports.
“Stymied by the least productive Congress in modern American history, Biden wants to hit the campaign trail with fresh policy wins tailored to the voting blocs he needs to defeat former President Trump.”
Trump World Wary of Ousting Mike Johnson
Axios: “Top Trump allies believe Johnson is as good of a House speaker as they are going to get this Congress.”
“Plus, the two men get along just fine, and there is no reason to throw the House into chaos and further weaken Republicans’ position seven months before Election Day.”
“The biggest fear is that if Greene moves forward with her threat, it would risk handing over the reins of the House — and along with that subpoena power — to Democrats, given Republicans’ razor-thin margin.”
GOP Lawmakers Say Mass Shooting Was God’s Retribution
“A pair of Republican lawmakers in Maine were ruled out of order on Thursday after one of them tried to suggest that a horrific mass shooting last October was God’s retribution for a state bill which expanded abortion access, and the other heartily agreed,” the Daily Beast reports.
“During a debate Wednesday night over a new bill which would extend the right to gender-affirming care to people from out of state, Rep. Michael Lemelin voiced his trepidation by making a wildly offensive connection between the two discrete incidents.”
Senate Subpoenas Leonard Leo Over Supreme Court Gifts
The Senate Judiciary Committee sent a subpoena Thursday to conservative judicial activist Leonard Leo as part of a months-long inquiry into undisclosed gifts to Supreme Court justices and he promptly rejected it, calling the move “politically motivated,” the Washington Post reports.
Said Leo: “I am not capitulating to his lawless support of Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and the left’s dark money effort to silence and cancel political opposition.”
Mortgage Rates Keep Rising
“The average long-term U.S. mortgage rate rose to its highest level in five weeks, a setback for prospective homebuyers during what’s traditionally the busiest time of the year for home sales,” the AP reports.
“The average rate on a 30-year mortgage rose to 6.88% from 6.82% last week, mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday. A year ago, the rate averaged 6.27%.”
GOP Lawmaker Left Loaded Handgun in Capitol Bathroom
Colorado state Rep. Don Wilson (R) “left a loaded, semiautomatic handgun in a bathroom at the Colorado Capitol on Tuesday night, an incident that comes as Democrats are trying to ban firearm possession in the building — and the GOP is fighting them,” the Colorado Sun reports.
“The Colorado State Patrol, which provides security at the Capitol, said Thursday that the gun, a 9mm Glock, was left on a shelf inside a single occupancy, unisex restroom. It was found by a janitor at about 9:30 p.m.”
House Democrats Won’t Bail Out Republicans on Rule Vote
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said Thursday that Democrats will not help GOP leaders with a procedural vote to advance legislation extending the government’s surveillance powers, The Hill reports.
Nineteen conservative Republicans joined forces with all House Democrats on Wednesday to sink a rule governing a bipartisan proposal to renew a controversial section of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, as well as several other Republican messaging bills.
Quote of the Day
“The two-party system that we got in place doesn’t work, hasn’t been working, hasn’t been working really since JFK was in office, and we need somebody who’s willing to lay it on the line. That’s what I love about Bobby. Think about it. They killed his uncle. They killed his dad. We know the CIA was involved, right? I mean, they can’t declassify it because it’s so damning. We know the FBI was involved… I’m not saying that was a conspiracy, but it’s kind of a weird coincidence. Bobby’s in danger, you know? Like he’s putting himself on the line.”
— Football star Aaron Rodgers, quoted by NBC Sports, acknowledging he was considered as Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s running mate.
U.K. Party Drops ‘Inactive’ Candidate Who Was Dead
“The right-wing political party set up by U.K. Brexiteer Nigel Farage has apologized after publicly firing one of its election candidates for being ‘inactive’ — when the candidate had in fact died,” Politico reports.
“Reform UK admitted it didn’t realize that Tommy Cawkwell, its election candidate in York Central, had perished when he was sacked for lack of activity.”
A party spokesman had told a local news outlet: “We can’t afford to have people doing nothing in an election year.”

A new Global Strategy Group poll shows Ravi Bhalla (D) with a five-point lead over incumbent Rep. Robert J. Menendez (D-NJ), 33% to 28% with 32% of Democratic primary voters still undecided.

The edition also includes a fresh look at the important Democratic Senate primary in Maryland, analysis of how strongly President Biden’s mediocre job rating correlates to his November performance, and a spotlight on Michigan — the first in our series of presidential battleground profiles.

Mike Johnson Pulled In More Than $20 Million Last Quarter
Politico: “The Louisiana Republican has worked aggressively to meet high expectations of him on the fundraising circuit, and his high intake during his first full quarter in the job indicates success breaking through with high-dollars donors his party needs to hang onto the House majority this fall.”
“So far, Johnson has traveled to more than 20 states for fundraising and campaigning with GOP candidates since he won the gavel in October, according to his office.”
Playbook: “Johnson’s intake might have been high, but former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s was higher: McCarthy brought in $35 million in Q1 of 2023 and $31.5 million in Q1 of 2022.”
GOP Lawmaker Wanted to Allow First Cousins to Marry

Trump Takes Over Congressional GOP Agenda

Then, hours after the former president pushed to ‘kill’ the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act reauthorization, 19 House Republicans did just that.”
